Lead by their crave for toys, happiness and all things cute or robot-like they abuse their computers to spit out designs that can be found in magazines, books, advertisements, plush, papertoys, on walls and interiours, t-shirts and shoes  around the galaxy. And I fell in love with their work.   www.loulouandtummie.com Mon, 9 Jan 2012 0:00:00 +0100 RSA Animations http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/rsa_animations/ http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/rsa_animations/ I shared an animation by the RSA that was given by Sir Ken Robinson, world-renowned education and creativity expert and recipient of the RSA's Benjamin Franklin award. He talks about the education system and why it is failing. He also has a solution. I find this to be very interesting, but also find the illustration that accompany it to be greatly helpfull! All of RSA's talks are illustrated in this way. Still, seeing them categorized like he did sort of really hammers the fact down - and results in interesting collages! Also, check out the video blog below it reminded me of. It's somewhat older and talks about the use of the Trajan font in poster designs. He photographs a scene or object repeatedly over time, then laser prints each shot and mounts them onto acrylic. Change is captured in each frame, and once layered, they become sculpture installations. The overall effect shows movement and the subtle passage of time. The Olympics...looking for a nice post for this day I offcourse stumbled on the Olympics and the controversial logo designed by Wolf Olins. There's enough said about this logo in the last few years and I think that's the good part about it, whether you like it or not everybody has his opinion ready about this identity. Everybody was talking about it and maybe will talk about till the Olympics take place. Or far beyond. One thing is sure Wolf Olins brought the London 2012 Olympics the attention it deserves. And I'm very curious how the identity will work out when used at the event.... See you in 2012, all the best from the O.K. And a great part why I love them is because of the cover. A good cover is necessary, it shows what the inside is about or tells a story of it's own. I've mentioned www.coverjunkie.com before, it's a large archive of magazines covers curated by Jaap Biemans. He recently selected the best magazine covers of 2011 and made this magazine out of it. He also asked designers to make a shortlist of their favourite 2011 magazine covers. These designers, the covers they selected and why are also inside this jam-packed magazine. It's a 'shout-out to creativity' as the introduction tells us. Well, in short this magazines shows a striking collection of magazine covers you really should see. The covers tell stories of what happened this year, and at the same time shows the current state of visual culture. A pretty round-up for 2011 which is really nice to have! Baltasar a magazine from our well known very cold but sunny Holland or even better The Netherlands. Eva van 't Loo send me an e-mail about her new magazine. Yes a new magazine again and I'm happy with it. Nobody can stop us from making magazines Yeehaa! Balatasar is a magazine in the form of a newspaper. And this issue is all about animals, the magazine feels a little bit like the poezenkrant because of the simplicity of the subject, animals. Just animals, animal stories, animal pictures nothing more nothing less. Design of the magazine is very estatic and all the content gets a lot fo space. This, the subject and the design, makes Baltasar a light weight magazine. And because it's the first issue I'm very curious how it will evolve with the upcoming issues. When the new issue is in, I'll let you know! http://www.evavantloo.com/baltasar/   Sat, 10 Dec 2011 0:00:00 +0100 Headscarf = Hoofddoek / Main book = Hoofdboek http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/headscarf_%3d_hoofddoek_-s-_main_book_%3d_hoofdboek/ http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/headscarf_%3d_hoofddoek_-s-_main_book_%3d_hoofdboek/ A magazine with over hundred headscarfs. Demo An exciting newspaper/magazine which dares to show fullspread images in a sparkling design and similar photography. One bad thing about it: it has not enough pages, because it tastes for more! DieNacht We reviewed DieNacht magazine before. The magazine has a very good editorial content and a straightforward design which makes the content stand out very well. This issue is a 10-year anniversary edition. Extra pages and more content to love. Indie Brands This is a book with cases of independent brands which shook the world in their own special way. It covers brands like Tony's Chocolonely, Threadless, Wetransfer. Brands that have become succesfull by doing something different. The cases are described very nice. The design of the book is simple. And maybe a bit boring actually. Each brand starts with the same kind of introduction page, followed by 1 or 2 spreads with images of their product or their studio. Could have been done more sparkling. Or maybe I'm just too grumpy about it. Selected B The second edition of Selected (hence, the B) has two volumes. One for student work, one for work by creative professionals. Categorized into the basic section (typography, posters, books, identity, etc) it shows work selected by judges formed especially for this book project. The work has a great variety. They want to cover international project, but most projects seem to be coming from countries as Spain (where the book is published), Belgium, UK and the Netherlands. The criteria of the judges are not always clear, and some things could have been left out. But hey, they didn't ask me! :) Slanted A gold/silver cover. Awesome! Slanted surprises every time again. Inside is harder to follow the path. But that's no problem once in a while. get this, Slanted is always a good read for type nerds. Stadtlich This citymagazine on the city of Hamburg releases a good newspaper every time as well. Good topics, good content. Makes you want to go to Hamburg! And next to that a personal letter with your own word....with this word you've been asked to design a visual for the upcoming issue. All this made quite a impression on me a lot of work and a personal touch to connect with the reader that I haven't seen in a magazine before. Thumbs up for this. The content of the magazine on the other hand is a hodge-podge. It's a theme based magazine but while reading the magazine I couldn't find the connection between all the written articles. The ideas behind the articles are good though. The magazine is larger then A4 and has a colourful and clear style. All in all it's a fun to read and to look at magazine and as said before the personal touch is the strength of this magazine. For the second issue I hope the content and feel will be taken to a next level. http://www.elsiemagazine.com/   Sat, 5 Nov 2011 0:00:00 +0100 Gamal Ez http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/gamal_ez/ http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/gamal_ez/ Gamal Ez makes huge installations that touch you by being very intimate and touching. Launched in June 1954, under the directorship of architect and designer Alberto Rosselli (1921-1976), when the controversial idea of “Industrial Design” was very new and unconvincing to Italian readers, this quarterly magazine published a total of 41 issues (including one double issue - May 1960, No. 26/27) until it ceased publication nearly 10 years later in 1963. Stile Industria promoted design as one of the most important cultural forces in modern Italy and provided a platform for discussions about the aesthetic and meaning of modern design in an international context. The covers were designed by a who’s who of post-war Italian and international graphic designers and artists who gave them their unmistakable Italian appearance. Visit the website here. Each day he posts a very funny short comic. And by very funny I mean, very very very funny-utterly-hilarious comics. His sort of 'innocent child-like' point of view, together with the curious drawings makes it that you get a dive in his wonderful world. Don't be surprised if you come across Jesus dropping his keys in the water (while walking over it ofcourse), a staircase calling 911 to commit a accidental murder, a giant cockroach asking for love or astronauts escaping on a pool table because they didn't bought an escape pod. This sweet little zine gets a smile on your face. So first thing to do is to like his facebook page. Second thing to do is to order this zine. Because you will need it! PS: on the first page Steven draws an unique comic especially for you! As our identities become deliberately constructed and broadcast commodities, our projected personae increasingly enmesh and define us. Cell acts as a virtual mirror, displaying a constructed fictional persona in place of our physical form. Composed from keyword tags mined from online profiles, these second selves stalk our movements through space, building in size and density over time. The resulting forms are alternate, technologically refracted manifestations of the body, revealing the digital aura while simultaneously allowing us escape from our own constructed identities. Comprised of lavish gardens and pools, Taman Sari also featured a bizarre man-made sea, connected beneath the ground with underwater tunnels and small island buildings. One of these island structures was used as a mosque, and was only accessible by underwater passage. The tiny mosque was only one story, and although basic, had all the necessary parts of a mosque including a mihrab, or small niche guiding worshippers toward Mecca. It also featured a series of staircases leading from the underwater entrances resembling MC Escher's relativity. Staircases lead up from five different doorways to a central platform and another staircase connects the five lower staircases to a higher doorway. Brimming with mystery, the plain mosque is only one of the wonders of the entire Taman Sari Water Castle complex. Today, many of the remains of the great 17th century compound have been lost. Pools have been filled in, which allowed for the discovery of many of the underground structures, but have destroyed the pristine castle quality. Human settlements have taken the place of the man-made lake, and much of the other buildings left standing are worse for wear. In 1995, the entire complex was listed as a tentative World Heritage Site. And I think that covers the subject quite well. It's a heavy book full of logos and casestudies of the designprocess behind it. The book starts with two forewords (why not one?). A bit of graphic design bla bla with a general point of view why logos are necessary and why logo design still has an 'enormous' impact The smallest, yet most interesting part of the book covers casestudies. It's nice to read and see how designers start the logo design process, what ideas they come up with for the assignment, and how they apply it on business cards, identity products, etc. The largest part of the book is pages full of logos. The logos are categorized and the ones with similar characteristics are put together on a page. So you'll find logos with abstract mammals next to even more logos with abstract mammals. Which makes it funny to see that so much logos look a like. The stronger ones stand out with this way of indexing. So overall, it's a nice flipthrough book if you're looking for inspiration when you have to make a logo or corporate identity! The book is published and distributed (in Europe) by INDEX BOOK. The intention is to impose personal feelings and stories onto container objects that traditionally have no feelings. Initially the viewer may, mistakenly, be drawn to my figures thinking them to be toys; however closer examination reveals their rather darker narrative. They invite you into an absurd and surreal world where things are not what they seem… I want my work to look like a very skilled child could have made it, clumsy and elaborate at the same time. My intention is to create compositions that have an underlying story and mood. I hope the interpretation of my work isn´t too fixed; my intent is to make it open for the viewer to filter their own references through, to make sense and contribute to the story themselves. My aim is to create a visual poetry based on my own personal story."   http://www.malenehartmannrasmussen.com Sat, 15 Oct 2011 0:00:00 +0100 Beautiful Maps http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/beautiful_maps/ http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/beautiful_maps/ Go shop at Herb Lester Associates! She says: In all of my prints, I collect things that I've cut out from Google Satellite View-- parking lots, silos, landflls, waste ponds. The view from a satellite is not a human one, nor is it one we were ever really meant to see. But it is precisely from this inhuman point of view that we are able to read our own humanity, in all of its tiny, reliably repetitive marks upon the face of the earth. From this view, the lines that make up basketball courts and the scattered blue rectangles of swimming pools become like hieroglyphs that read: people were here.

At the same time, like any photograph, satellite imagery is also immediately an image of the past. That is, to look at satellite imagery is to look not only down upon ourselves but back in time, even if only by a matter of hours or days. In recording the moment at which things as bizarre as water parks and racetracks covered the earth, the photograph also implies that moment's own passing, encoding each tiny structure with vulnerability and pre-emptive nostalgia. My desire to collect these pieces stems not only from the fascination of any collector but from a wish to save these low-resolution, sporadically-updated pixels--these strange pictures of ourselves--from time and the ephemerality of the internet.   Wed, 12 Oct 2011 0:00:00 +0100 Blackboards in porn http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/blackboards_in_porn/ http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/blackboards_in_porn/ Awesome! Blackboards in Porn, or Do these mathematic formulas make any sense? One example (on 1st image): 2x + 3 = 9 x = /2 [or 12?] Mathematics - simple algebra. The handwriting is large and generally clear, even though this class appears to only have one student in it, and he sits at the very front. It might be worth advising the student to have his eyes tested if he is unable to read smaller text at this distance. Remember that poor learning may be as a result of poor vision - the student might not even be aware that he has a problem. If the teacher does keep her handwriting that size she will have to get a bigger whiteboard when she starts doing quadratic equations. Finally, when writing algebraic equations, it is preferable to do a more cursive x for the unknown symbol, to avoid confusion with a multiplication sign. Unfortunately, the answer is unclearly written - is it 2? 12? 1/2? Whichever of these it is meant to be, it is wrong. Here is the correct calculation: 2x + 3 = 9 Subtract 3 from both sides: 2x = 6 Divide both sides by 2: x = 3 Given the differences in handwriting in the '2's though, it is possible that the teacher left the answer blank for the student to fill in, and is pointing for him to return to his desk. Either way, it is better to show one's working, so that if an error is made, but followed by correct calculations, the examiner may still give marks for the later parts of the answer, even if incorrect. 5/10 - could do better. The author's statement: "We just returned from Los Angeles shooting a documentary/ music video for Dutch indie band ‘TIKA’. We battled the crazy heat that kept this city in a ferm grip, and followed actor Carel Struycken (The Adams Family, Star Trek, Het Paard van Sinterklaas) on his voyage from ‘the best that civilisation has to offer’ to the wildest of nature, in the middle of Californian deserts, mountain ranges and lakes. FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE is a documentary disguised as a music video. It’s a short documentary that is made as a music video for the Dutch indie band Tika, a combination of Moss and El Pino. The film explores the increasing unease that many feel with modern society. We show this feeling through the eyes of ‘giant’ Carel Struycken, who rose to fame by playing iconic freaks in pop culture, like Lurch in the Adams Family and Mr. Homn in Star Trek. Subjects are asked to sit in front of a camera and sit there for a minute. Not seeing or being told when the minute is over, they have to judge for themselves when it is over. When they feel that the time is past, a new person may sit. It's not just another Daily Photograph project. The 'Photo of the Day' website (link here) shows images taken by a man who captures his life in polaroid pictures from 1979 untill 1997. At first (from 1979 on) the photos start off casually; friends, family, joyfull moments. And the mysterious website reveals the life of the person's life bit by bit. He also takes photos of his film- and music projects (1980's). In the final years he photographs himself more often. And it is quite clear that he's very ill. The photos in the hospital, or the results from it,  prove it. In his last days he asked his girlfriend to marry him. Two days later you see photos of the wedding. Only a few weeks later he will pass away. Chirs Higgins did some research for his blogarticle about it and discovered that a close friend put the photos of the man, Jamie Livingston, online and made a exhibition about it. It is a result of a research about extending the virtual instrument onto the screen and furthermore into the hands of the performer. At the current state of the work, a gestural input unit is used to steer animated lines in a 2D space. The lines intersect and based on the dimensions and characteristics of each intersection point a sound is made. The result is an audiovisual performance, an improvisation on a set of algorithms where what you see is what you hear.   Mon, 12 Sep 2011 0:00:00 +0100 Shea Hembrey http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/shea_hembrey/ http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/shea_hembrey/  Shea Hembrey is a remarcable artist. For their most recent work 'Under nuclear threat' they made an army of scarecrow-like nuclear figures. Their ghostly appearance, a threatening death march upon their surroundings, appeals to the modern fear of what events such as occurred in Japan might do to our world. found via fecalface.com, images via luzinterruptus' website: luzinterruptus.com Wed, 7 Sep 2011 0:00:00 +0100 Bright Bikes http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/bright_bikes/ http://www.ok-periodicals.com/recent/bright_bikes/ Such a simple, elegant idea: make abandoned rusted bikes into public furniture by spraypainting them and planting flowers in the baskets. That's exactly what Caroline Macfarlane and Vanessa Nicholas did and they called it The Good Bike Project. Would be a nice project to do here in Utrecht, where bike wrecks are a dime a dozen... found via notcot, images via visuall.net At the latter you can also read a nice interview with these artists.
