Theatergezelschap De Utrechtse Spelen heeft dinsdag het eerste interactieve theateraffiche gelanceerd. Mensen die de Rain Man-app op hun smartphone of tablet installeren en deze voor een poster, flyer of advertentie houden, zien de tekening tot leven komen. Ook kunnen gebruikers met onder andere actrice Anna Drijver op de foto.

Expositie 'The Typographic Voice' 4 & 5 Februari Amsterdam
Graag nodigt de minor Typografie u uit voor de expositie 'The Typographic Voice'.
In de expositie wordt werk getoond dat is gemaakt tijdens deze minor door studenten van de afdelingen Graphic- en Interaction design ArtEZ Arnhem.
Tijdens de minor is veel veelzijdig werk gemaakt met verschillende mediums en verschillende thema's. Een overkoepelende gedachte achter de minor, is de rol van de ontwerper als auteur die wordt bevraagd.
The minor Typography invites you for the exhibition 'The Typographic Voice'. In this exhibition you can see work wich is made by Graphic- and Interaction design students of ArtEZ Arnhem. During the minor a lot of divers work is made with different themes and different media. With the overall idea about the role of the designer as an author.

Here is some short footage on the recent work on quantum levitation by the Japanese Institute of Science and Technology. They were inspired by the game Wipe'out to do their work. With this new technology, we hope to revolutionize the world of motor transport; Maybe in a near future they could assist to a real Wipe'out race.

I shared an animation by the RSA that was given by Sir Ken Robinson, world-renowned education and creativity expert and recipient of the RSA's Benjamin Franklin award.
He talks about the education system and why it is failing. He also has a solution. I find this to be very interesting, but also find the illustration that accompany it to be greatly helpfull!

Osaka, Japan-based Nobuhiro Nakanishi’s mesmerizing body of work entitled Layered Drawings is truly breathtaking. He photographs a scene or object repeatedly over time, then laser prints each shot and mounts them onto acrylic. Change is captured in each frame, and once layered, they become sculpture installations. The overall effect shows movement and the subtle passage of time.

A co-worker attended me to this blog post by Christophe Courtois about something we all kinda know already: movie posters are highly formulaic, they all look alike. Still, seeing them categorized like he did sort of really hammers the fact down - and results in interesting collages! Also, check out the video blog below it reminded me of. It's somewhat older and talks about the use of the Trajan font in poster designs.
Okay 2011 is almost at its end, 2012 is coming up...so what to post on this last day of 2011....offcourse something that's going to happen in 2012. The Olympics...looking for a nice post for this day I offcourse stumbled on the Olympics and the controversial logo designed by Wolf Olins.
There's enough said about this logo in the last few years and I think that's the good part about it, whether you like it or not everybody has his opinion ready about this identity. Everybody was talking about it and maybe will talk about till the Olympics take place. Or far beyond. One thing is sure Wolf Olins brought the London 2012 Olympics the attention it deserves.
And I'm very curious how the identity will work out when used at the event....

The top image you see here is one that was sent in for O.K. Periodicals the thriller issue. We love it...but because of some weird power from above it didn't end up being in the magazine. To bad, so here in the rebound Marshall Rake and his wonderful work :D.
Marshall is a graphic designers specialized in typography and print design. And has some stunning work on his website. And as you can see he is the person behind They Magazine a magazine reviewed on this blog earlier.

A beautiful typewriter, I would really like a how to do this at home explanation. Looks like a fun pass time for the christmas holiday. Tyree Callahan reconstructed a typewriter and turned it into an instant art machine, wonderful.
I love magazines. And a great part why I love them is because of the cover. A good cover is necessary, it shows what the inside is about or tells a story of it's own. I've mentioned www.coverjunkie.com before, it's a large archive of magazines covers curated by Jaap Biemans. He recently selected the best magazine covers of 2011 and made this magazine out of it. He also asked designers to make a shortlist of their favourite 2011 magazine covers. These designers, the covers they selected and why are also inside this jam-packed magazine. It's a 'shout-out to creativity' as the introduction tells us.
Well, in short this magazines shows a striking collection of magazine covers you really should see. The covers tell stories of what happened this year, and at the same time shows the current state of visual culture. A pretty round-up for 2011 which is really nice to have!
Erik Boker, is published in our latest O.K. Periodicals with his product dissections. Wonderful pictures that make you wonder....what more does he do? Take a look at his website and see what great projects he has. The "Animal Snack Kingdom" project for example very nice compositions with candy in animal forms. And don't forget to look at the portraits he made.

Mike Doyle builds amazing LEGO houses and he writes about it as well.
This is quite insane, Scott Weaver worked on this piece of art for over 35 years! And he used about 100,000 toothpick building it. I am really impressed, and as you can see in the movie the artist has some trouble taking his eyes away from it, he's proud and not afraid to show it ;-)

Sorry I've been so busy I didn't have time to review this "send in october magazine" earlier. Baltasar a magazine from our well known very cold but sunny Holland or even better The Netherlands. Eva van 't Loo send me an e-mail about her new magazine. Yes a new magazine again and I'm happy with it. Nobody can stop us from making magazines Yeehaa!
Balatasar is a magazine in the form of a newspaper. And this issue is all about animals, the magazine feels a little bit like the poezenkrant because of the simplicity of the subject, animals. Just animals, animal stories, animal pictures nothing more nothing less. Design of the magazine is very estatic and all the content gets a lot fo space. This, the subject and the design, makes Baltasar a light weight magazine. And because it's the first issue I'm very curious how it will evolve with the upcoming issues. When the new issue is in, I'll let you know!

A magazine with over hundred headscarfs. Each one has their own story to tell. Really inspiring and intriguing, the story behind it is almost as exciting as all the different patterns. Of course you can order it online, and there's currently also an exhibition on it in the Central Museum in Utrecht. Go, watch and learn!

Ro&Ad Architects were asked to design a bridge over the former moat of an old fortress. However, they thought it to be historically inappropriate to make an easy access way where once the enemy was stopped at the gates, so instead they made an invisible bridge that sinks beneath the water level. Nice concept, and it looks awesome too!

Demo
An exciting newspaper/magazine which dares to show fullspread images in a sparkling design and similar photography. One bad thing about it: it has not enough pages, because it tastes for more!
DieNacht
We reviewed DieNacht magazine before. The magazine has a very good editorial content and a straightforward design which makes the content stand out very well. This issue is a 10-year anniversary edition. Extra pages and more content to love.
Indie Brands
This is a book with cases of independent brands which shook the world in their own special way. It covers brands like Tony's Chocolonely, Threadless, Wetransfer. Brands that have become succesfull by doing something different.
The cases are described very nice. The design of the book is simple. And maybe a bit boring actually. Each brand starts with the same kind of introduction page, followed by 1 or 2 spreads with images of their product or their studio. Could have been done more sparkling. Or maybe I'm just too grumpy about it.
Selected B
The second edition of Selected (hence, the B) has two volumes. One for student work, one for work by creative professionals. Categorized into the basic section (typography, posters, books, identity, etc) it shows work selected by judges formed especially for this book project.
The work has a great variety. They want to cover international project, but most projects seem to be coming from countries as Spain (where the book is published), Belgium, UK and the Netherlands.
The criteria of the judges are not always clear, and some things could have been left out. But hey, they didn't ask me! :)
Slanted
A gold/silver cover. Awesome! Slanted surprises every time again. Inside is harder to follow the path. But that's no problem once in a while. get this, Slanted is always a good read for type nerds.
Stadtlich
This citymagazine on the city of Hamburg releases a good newspaper every time as well.
Good topics, good content. Makes you want to go to Hamburg!

Currently on show at Huis van Marseille photography museum is Scarlett Hooft Graafland, who makes surreal photos in usually far out places. She makes small but striking additions to the otherwise desolate landscapes.I love it when strong concepts and an eye for beauty come together in photography this way.
It reminds me of Tarsem Singh's movie 'The Fall' a little bit, which is something else to watch if you're into this kind of stuff.

Yesterday was the opening of the exhibition for the Rotterdam Designprize. One of the nominees is: Matthijs Munnik with his Microscopic orchestra and he is one of my favorites.
By tracking the tiny worm the C elegans and translating their motion to sound Matthijs has made it possible to listen to a opera of different microscopic worms. A wonderful and magical project. Visiti his website for more information.
